Pasadena, California – March 7, 2013 – Giving boys and girls necessary tools to help them excel in life through the essence of basketball.
Cherie Nelson of Altadena, California was a standout high school player who went on to play 4 years at University of California, where she was an All-American and averaged 29 points a game. Her game-high record of 51 points is still in tact and she is currently ranked 2nd in all-time scoring and 2nd in rebounding. After completing 4 years at USC, she went on to play professional basketball overseas for three years in Italy and Japan.
Cherie is using her pull to reel in neighborhood standouts who went on to play professionally and her USC alumni. Her friends will speak and assist her in running her basketball skills clinics. What better place to start than Pasadena, where it all began?
Lamond Murray (Pasadena, CA) played 12 seasons in the NBA. He will be one of Cherie’s guest speakers. He completed an impressive 4-year tenure at the University of California (Berkeley), where he was teammates with Jason Kidd. Murray was selected 7th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1994 NBA draft. He's played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors, and the New Jersey Nets throughout his 12-year, 736 game NBA career. He averaged 11.3 points per game.
Keith Johnson of NSPA (Northstar Sports Performance Academy) will facilitate. He is one of the top trainers in Southern California.
Cherie is bringing along a few friends from her USC alumni.
Paula McGee will speak to the participants about her years at USC, where she and her twin sister, Pam, teamed up with Cheryl Miller and Cynthia Cooper to win two back-to-back National Championships in 1983 and 1984. As a freshman, McGee set the USC freshman scoring record by averaging 20 points per game. She currently ranks fourth all-time on the career-scoring list at Troy.
Ronnie Coleman played at USC from 1987 to 1991. He finished as the school's all-time leading scorer, where he is now 2nd in USC's all-time scoring history. He attended the NBA Atlanta Hawks veteran’s camp in 1992. He was the last player cut. Ronnie’s professional career includes the Sioux Falls Skyforce (1992-93), stints in Israel, Spain, France, Turkey, Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico and for the Long Beach (CA) Jam (2004-05).
2013 is the first year of this program. Cherie Nelson plans to continue to bringing fun and excitement to neighborhoods by teaching basketball skills. Along side current and former professional players, Cherie hopes to encourage youth to stay in school and work hard.
